Gareth is Partner: Hybrid Capital at Old Mutual Alternative Investments (OMAI), where he leads the origination, analysis, processing and monitoring of preference share, mezzanine debt and other hybrid capital transactions across South Africa and the rest of Africa. He oversees the investment process, transaction execution, portfolio management and strategic direction of the Hybrid Capital business unit.

As a member of the Investment Committee, Gareth is actively involved in all investment decision-making processes and retains portfolio responsibility for key investments. He leads deal sourcing through proprietary networks and banking relationships, structures innovative hybrid capital solutions tailored to client needs, and manages portfolio companies through board representation and strategic advisory engagement.

Prior to joining OMAI, Gareth spent over eight years in alternative capital markets at Nedbank Corporate and Investment Banking, most recently as Head: Alternative Equity. In this role, he led the origination and execution of mezzanine finance, leveraged finance and equity-like transactions for a diverse client base including owner-managed businesses, investment holding companies, private equity houses, corporates and BEE shareholders. His experience spans the entire capital structure and encompasses complex transaction structuring, negotiation and execution across a broad range of instruments.

Gareth brings more than 20 years of financial services and investment experience. He is a qualified Chartered Accountant in South Africa and holds a B.Bus.Sci in Finance and Accounting from the University of Cape Town. Earlier in his career, he served articles at Ernst & Young and worked in structured finance and transaction advisory roles across multiple jurisdictions, including a secondment to the EY New York office focusing on private equity clients.
